David Wertheimer

David Wertheimer is Executive Director of the Entertainment Technology Center @ USC, a non-profit research organization funded by the major Hollywood studios and several leading technology and service companies, including Cisco, Thomson and Deluxe.

Through its "Anytime/Anywhere Content Lab," the ETC provides a forum where the industry can explore how users will consume content in emerging combinations of technologies and networks. Headquartered in the School of Cinematic Arts digital collaboratory annex in the heart of Los Angeles ETC also conducts digital screenings at the school’s flagship Norris Theatre Complex on USC’s University Park Campus.

Wertheimer was named to head the Center in early 2007. Previously, he was president of the Digital Entertainment division of Paramount Pictures; founder and CEO of WireBreak Entertainment, a digital content distribution and television production company; as well as technology and business management positions at Oracle and NeXT.

Consumers don't plan to cut back on home entertainment in 2009

While consumers say they plan to spend less on gadgets and consumer electronics this year, home entertainment ranks as the one area where they'll spend more, according to a new study out from Forrester Research today. 

In a survey of 5,000 consumers, 16% said they expect to spend more money on home entertainment this year. Most of those surveyed said they'd cut spending on entertainment outside the home before they cut spending on home entertainment. 

Among those planning to buy an HDTV, 44% said they still plan to buy one, while 7% said they are even more likely to buy one this year. 

Mobile phones were another category where consumers said they plan to make purchases despite the economy.

Demand for music drops among Internet users

Internet users bought fewer CDs, dragging down overall music sales in the third quarter, despite an increase in paid downloads, according to a new study from the NPD Group.

NPD says demand dropped 2% during the period among Internet users over the age of 13.

CD purchases fell an estimated19% in third quarter 2008, compared to the previous year. The sharpest declines were among those aged 26 to 35, who slowed their music buying by 26%. Teens slowed overall music buying by 34%.

But teens increased their buying and sharing of digital music: They bought 34% more downloads than the previous year while also increasing illegal file sharing by 46%.

Most online video watched at work

Most online video viewers watch between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays, according to a new report out from Nielsen Online.

Nielsen found that 65% of online viewers said they watched during traditional work hours. Just over half, 51%, watch online video between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on weekends.

No big surprise. Nielsen notes that broadband penetration among Web visitors at work is 96%, with many employees spending all day at their desk.
