Nokia, Spike Lee partner on user-generated short film - April 24, 2008
Yes, 'Do the Right Mobile Thing' was my initial choice as the headline, I admit it. In fact I spent a good ten minutes trying to tie-in various
Spike Lee movie titles with the news that he's linked up with
Nokia to direct a short film featuring YouTube-style videos shot by consumers on their mobile phones. 'He Got Mobile Game' might've worked.
According to the
New York Times report, "Nokia is seeking to combine the populist appeal of user-generated content with the power of a famous director’s pedigree. The film will have three acts, each three to five minutes long, with the theme loosely based on the concept of humanity."
Mobile phone users/aspiring directors in the US can upload their videos onto a personalized Nokia website and visitors to the site can view the clips and vote for their favorite. Lee will then assess the video, music, photos and text material created by consumers with their cell phones and then help assemble the various snippets into a three-part film.
Said Lee: “I’m interested because it’s a great collaborative effort. Within five years, new movies will be made with devices like these.”
And though the finished product will be available for viewing online, Nokia has yet to work out a deal for which carriers will distribute it to viewers on mobile phones. "Mobile X." That's too good not to appear somewhere.
