Gossip Girl's 15 minutes begins (again) - April 21, 2008

I am so not the right person to counsel anyone on whether or not to watch the CW drama Gossip Girl. Nature on PBS is more my cup of tea, but, I know a good media story when I see one. So I've joined the Blogosphere hullabaloo today regarding the juicy New York Magazinecover story this week on Gossip Girl and how it apparently is "changing the way changing the way we watch television." Whatever. I do know the story takes up seven, Internet pages, so clearly there's a lot of information being sorted out regarding this TV phenomenon that apparently owes much of its popularity to a youthful demo that blogs, texts and basically lives on the web. I can see where the naughty goings-on of privileged teenagers at an elite private school in New York City can definitely cause a TV stir, much like Beverly Hills 90210 did when I was younger - only this time there's a massive undercurrent of web power to drive such a show like Gossip Girl to even greater heights, both exciting and irritating.

According to the article, "New episodes routinely arrived at the No. 1 most-downloaded spot on iTunes, and then there were the hundreds of thousands who were downloading free week-old episodes on the CW’s site." Based solely on TV and print ads, and the fact that I am entirely not part of the demographic that would 'get' this show, I think it looks awful (attractive cast notwithstanding). Clearly I'm in the hip-TV-culture minority on this one. It returns tonight. Perhaps I should watch and try to capture some of my lost youth. Or maybe I'll catch the show about gorillas on Nature. Hmm…..
