Scarlett Johansson's new album streaming online - April 23, 2008
Two points right off the bat:
a) I am big-big fan of Tom Waits.
b) I have been both quite worried and intrigued about the forthcoming Anywhere I Lay My Head, Scarlett Johansson's new album of 10 Tom Waits covers and one original tune.
To say there's been a lot of discourse on the web about the May 20 release is an understatement. Just the idea that the lovely actress would dare dip into the Waits canon irked so many music lovers/Bloggers/critics that the album was trashed long before a note was heard.
Well the music leaks have begun and so have the opinions on whether or not the "Match Point" star does justice to Mr. Waits.
A quick scan of early reviews portends that the blonde bombshell's album just might suck a lot less than previously thought. It doesn't hurt that a pair of tracks ("Falling Down" and "Fannin' Street") feature guest vocals from the Thin White Duke himself - David Bowie.
Here is Uncut's track-by-track review. And here is NY Mag's 'better than they totally could have imagined' review.
In advance of the CD's official May 20 release, all 11 tracks are free for the streaming via Johansson's official website. Listen to it here.
I've finally listened to a few tracks, and I'll admit that it's not awful. Her smoky voice and the ethereal studio production, under the guise of TV On The Radio's David Andrew Sitek, who produced the album, keep the songs mostly enjoyable, if a bit sluggish at times. Johansen might have a sexy voice, but it's buried in the mix to cover her vocal deficiencies.
It's a far cry from the beauty of the gravely voiced Tom Waits originals, but for a dinner party or make-out session, I'll say this isn't too shabby.
No doubt there will continue to be a lot of chitchat on the 'Net as the release nears and more folks listen online.
The track list is as follows:
"Fawn"
"Town With No Cheer"
"Falling Down"
"Anywhere I Lay My Head"
"Fannin' Street"
"Song for Jo"
"Green Grass"
"I Wish I Was in New Orleans"
"I Don't Want To Grow Up"
"No One Knows I'm Gone"
"Who Are You?"
