Gaming debate sets stage for Grand Theft Auto IV - April 24, 2008
Ben Kuchera at
Ars Technica has the goods on the hot debate over gaming, between media watchdogs and the gaming industry, as
Grand Theft Auto IV prepares to take over the world on April 29th.
Kuchera notes that as the game is finding its way to retailers, gamers and industry-types have begun the march into information overload as online forums and blogs are ablaze with dissecting
trailers and assorted information, new interviews and everything else
Grand Theft Auto-related.
But about that debate…
Writes Kuchera: "Both sides of the violent gaming debate are posturing and positioning themselves to get their messages out about the goodness or evils of gaming as the release date nears."
He notes that the Parents Television Council 'has put retailers "on notice" about the latest
Grand Theft Auto.'
"If retailers go against parents' wishes and sell the game, they should not market the game to children in any way, nor should they display the game where minors can see it," PTC president Winter said in a statement. "In addition, retailers must enforce checking ID before selling the game to anyone. Legally, stores cannot sell children pornographic magazines or handguns—but they can legally sell video games to children that contain pornographic content or that teach children how to kill."
