I was beginning to wonder when we were going to see the usual gamers-are-normal people-too report that the Entertainment Software Assoc. puts out during its annual E3 confab to tout how average gamers are and here it is.
According to the 2008 Essential Facts report out today, more gamers are paying to play online. ESA reports that 22% of heavy gamers pay to play their games online, versus 19% in 2007 and 8% in 2004.
Most common games played online are puzzles, board and trivia games geared at a broad audience, which account for 47% of online play. Action/sports strategy games accounted for 16% of online gaming, followed by downloadable games like Bejeweled and Diner Dash at 14% and multiplayer games with 11%.
ESA says 36% of gamers play on wireless devices.
As for their normalcy, ESA says that 40% of gamers are women and they're aging (gamers, not women), with the average gamer now 35. -- Jennifer Netherby
