Shipments of digital cable boxes set new record - May 8, 2008
China and the transition to digital TV drove a record-setting 41 million shipments of cable boxes worldwide last year, according to a
new report from our sister research firm In-Stat.
That's up from 29.7 million shipments last year. In-Stat expects demand to continue strong through 2012.
Set-top box revenues were up 25%, surpassing $6 billion in 2007. Motorola and Cisco Systems were the top manufacturers with a 45% share of the market, though they are facing increased pressure from Chinese manufacturers. Some of the strongest growth was in China, where 14.7 million boxes were shipped last year versus 9.9 million the previous year. Shipments of advanced set-top boxes, such as HD-capable and PVR-enabled boxes were up 30% to 11 million units in 2007.
