Amazon Moves Up a Rank With MP3 Sales - August 5, 2008
MP3 downloads helped make Amazon.com the fourth largest music retailer based on sales of CDs and digital downloads during the first half of the year, according to the latest numbers from NPD Group's MusicWatch.
ITunes continued to hold its place as the top music retailer, which it first nabbed earlier this year. Wal-Mart was No. 2 in sales followed by Best Buy. Amazon surpassed Target for the No. 4 spot.
"We expect Apple will consolidate its lead in the retail music market, as CD sales continue to slow," said NPD Group analyst Russ Crupnick. "Amazon's CD buyers tend to be older, so they haven't abandoned the CD format to the extent seen in the average music buyer. Plus Amazon's successful introduction of its digital download store will help the company improve its position in the future."
NPD said Amazon sales improved because online CD sales aren't declining as fast as in-store sales and because of the launch of its digital music store last year.
MusicWatch is based on a survey of consumers aged 13 and older about their purchases. It doesn't include sales of ringtones or subscription music services.
