High definition DVD sales in Europe nearly doubled between 2006 and 2007, with the U.K. leading in uptake, according to a new report out by DEG Europe. (http://www.webitpr.com/release_detail.asp?ReleaseID=7916)
High def disc sales were up 85%, according to tracking numbers from GfK, which is one of the few firms to track disc sales in the ultra-fragmented European market. Of course, this shouldn’t be all that surprising since high def players didn’t reach market in Europe until late in 2006.
Europeans bought 124,000 high definition players in 2007. Still miniscule compared to DVD. In the U.K. alone, 33 million DVD players were sold during the same time frame.
However, the group said high def sales are outpacing that of DVD in its first year with 2.5 million high def discs sold in Europe in 2007, more than the 1.48 million DVDs sold in Europe in its first year on the market.
Brits are taking the lead in upgrading to high def, with 34% of next generation sales in the U.K.
