Streaming Video Revenues to Reach $70 Billion by 2013 - April 10, 2008

Insight Research Corp. predicts that streaming video and music over the Internet, an IPTV network or mobile phones will generate $70 billion in revenues over the next six Five (they say six, but my count for 2008-2013 is five, no?) years.
In its report, "Streaming Media, IPTV, and Broadband
Transport: Telecommunications Carriers and Entertainment Services 2008-2013," Insight says streaming will grow 29% a year through 2013.
On the music side, Insight believes that paid downloads will continue to account for the majority of revenues.
In terms of streamed video, researchers note that TV networks now regularly stream programs after their broadcast airing with ads, which seem to be gaining consumer acceptance.
"The outlook for streaming media has never been brighter. Questions surrounding consumers' willingness to pay for content have been dispelled by satellite radio and iTunes," Insight Research president Robert Rosenberg said. "The forecasts that we present are conservative and in line with current performance. If, however, per-stream costs drop faster than anticipated, we have quicker acceptance of IPTV, or improvements in 3G delivery take place faster than expected, it could blow the doors off of our forecasts, propelling this industry into explosive growth.”
Not a lot of details on where revenues will come from in the release, but they promise details on streaming by market and platform. -J.N.
