Sony fiddles again with PS3 - October 8, 2007
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe on
Monday confirmed that it will ship a new configuration of PlayStation 3 in November in Europe, the Middle East, Australia and Africa.
The new model will have a 40GB hard drive and will list for 399 euros ($479). At the same time, the company is phasing out the 499 euro 60GB model in those territories.
The announcement fueled expectations that a 40GB model would also ship in the U.S. before Christmas, probably at a $399 price point. Sony is also phasing out the 60GB model here, having already dropped the 20GB SKU earlier this year. Assuming the new model ship, there will be two configurations available in the U.S.: a $399, 40GB model and a $599, 80GB model.
Got all that?
There have now been more different configurations of the PS3 console than there have been compelling PS3 games, which is the real root of Sony's problems.
Maybe the new model will land some sales this Christmas. But what Sony Computer Entertainment really needs is not a new package but a clear strategy.
