No SOC this year - December 1, 2008
The Federal Communications Commission has apparently decided to take a pass on the MPAA's petition for a waiver of the rules on the use of
selectable output controls by cable and satellite providers, at least for this year. Although the commission has not yet released the formal agenda for its Dec. 18 public meeting, the
Wall Street Journal is
reporting on its Web site that chairman Kevin Martin has decided to leave the issue to his successor. Instead, Martin will use his next-to-last public meeting as chairman to focus on a play to offer free, porn-less wireless Internet service to all Americans despite strong opposition from wireless carriers.
The proposal for free and porn-free Internet is part of a broader plan backed by Martin to auction off a chunk a new slice of spectrum. As part of the plan, the winning bidder would be required to set aside a portion of the spectrum for wireless Internet service and implement filtering technology to screen out porn sites.
