Sony DADC happy to yield - October 2, 2007

Unusual press release today from Sony DADC.

The hook for the release was the 10 millionth dual-layer BD50 disc to roll out of Sony's three disc replication plants in Terre Haute, Ind., Salzburg, Austria and Shizuoka, Japan.

Fair enough. But then came this not-that-you-asked bit:

BD25 yield rates and machine output performance have exceeded our expectations. Single layer yields are consistently around 85% and daily machine output levels are approaching parity with our DVD assets," said Mike Mitchell, EVP Sony DADC. "With regard to BD50, yields have increased steadily, and are consistently between 75% and 79%.
Is Sony feeling a bit defensive over the persistent rumors and reports of critically low yields and long cycle times from its Blu-ray production lines?

At this point, of course, yields probably don't matter a heck of a lot to the Blu-ray studios because the overall numbers are still low and Sony's probably eating the extra costs anyway. By the time the numbers are big enough to matter, presumably, Sony (and Panasonic) will have worked out the production issues.

But perhaps the lady doth protest too much?
