Happy white spaces day - September 24, 2008
Today is White Spaces Day. Bet you didn't know that. Or even what White Spaces Day is. But don't feel bad. Nobody else did, either. Still, the
Wireless Innovation Alliance, a group that includes Google, Microsoft, HP, Dell and others, has declared Sept. 24 White Spaces Day. And to mark the occasion, they're holding an event on Capitol Hill, keynoted by Google co-founder Larry Page, to showcase for lawmakers the various wireless broadband applications that could develop if Google, Microsoft, Dell, HP et. al. are allowed to use the currently unlicensed slices of spectrum in between broadcast channels, known as "white spaces."
Whether any lawmakers will be able to pull themselves away from nationalizing the capital markets long enough to hear the speeches is unclear. But your friendly neighborhood Media Wonk will be there and will report back later.
