Can you hear me now? - March 13, 2008
Apologies to anyone who had trouble accessing the site yesterday. We were experiencing some technical difficulties, which, knock wood, should now be resolved. Media Wonk was also off yesterday, which accounts for the lack of fresh blog postings. (Media Wonk is also convinced that yesterday's technical problems were the Web gods' punishment for taking a day off, but that's another story.)
Meanwhile:
No surprise here, but for the record, a Microsoft executive
told Reuters yesterday that no talks are underway with Sony about incorporating a Blu-ray drive into the Xbox 360 system, either as an internal drive or an outboard option, despite much speculation to the contrary.
"Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience," group product manager for Xbox 360 Aaron Greenberg said. "We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content...We still think we have a great value, that we have significantly better value than Sony."
If any discussions are underway, they're likely about the next generation of Xbox (720?), which is almost certainly under development by now. In the meantime, Microsoft is hard at work with Toshiba on DVD2.0, incorporating HDi, networking capability and, most likely, Toshiba's 960p output Super Upconverting process, all of which would be realizable on existing Xbox 360 consoles.
